Before & After Filing Cabinets

 

So I was in search of a new desk and while checking my favorite site craigslist I came across these beautiful filing cabinets. What made them beautiful you ask? They where only... wait for it... 5 bucks for the pair. Love it perfect for me to work my magic.

 

 

 

 

 

After paint and a desk top here is my new custom desk. Ta da...

 

 

I used the same painting technique I used on the dresser and vanity. What can I say I love that old vintage look and the big plus is in a house with kids this look is great cause the more they use it the more vintage it looks. "That's not a scratch it's just more character." If you want the painting steps look here. I even used the same spray paint Rust-Oleum Satin Espresso and Vintage White.

 

Note: When painting the drawers I coved the inside of the drawers with garbage bags. I didn't want to waste time or paint on the inside of the drawers.

 

 

 

 

 

 I did get to reuse the hardware on this project. As you can see they started out brass. I tryed hammered platinum but then settled on using the Rust-Oleum Satin Espresso. Just sprayed it on. Note: I did put the screws in the hardware when I sprayed it so they would be brown too.

 

  

 

When I was done I took a lovely drive to one of my favorite places Ikea is it just me or does everyone hear angles singing when you hear the word Ikea ok just me. So as I ate my dollar ice cream and hot dog I purchased the top for my desk. I went with the Vika Amon 78 by 24 that was normally $45 but the as-is gods were looking down on me and I found one there for 20 bucks wooo hooo.

 

So $25 bucks later I had myself a perfect custom desk. It fits the odd space I had planned for a desk. It has tons of practical storage. And last but not least it looks like a beautiful piece of furniture and not an ugly piece office furniture.

Family Snow Day

 

So while at Costco I bought something I thought I would never buy... a sled. But hey we have the frozen water stuff all over up here in Utah. So we took our sleds out on a test run and they are a winner with my 3 kids. Look at how happy they are but if you saw me behind the camera you would see on my face how cold I am.

Halloween Letter Craft

Don't you just love it when you hit gold at the Target dollar section. Well that's what inspired this craft. I made a similar craft for Easter where I made the word Hop and the O has bunny ears. So when I walked into target and saw the bat headband the creative juices began flowing. In the end I LOVE IT, I can put it on a table top but this year I hung it on my front door and I love it more.

 

 

Well what are you waiting for lets get crafting...

 

Supplies

 

• Paper Mache letters ($1.99 @ all craft stores, I got mine @ Hobby Lobby 50% off)
• Scrapbook paper (I scored this glittery paper @ $1 section @ Target in a pack)
• Halloween headband ($1 section of Target)
• Ribbon
• Spider web
• Embellishments (mine are from Target and Walmart.)
• Paint
• Mod Podge

 

To Make:

 

First. I cut the letters out of the scrapbook paper. Note when tracing the letter to cut, lay it on the right side of the paper. This will allow you to place the design where you like on the right side of the letter.

 

 

Second. Paint the edges of the letters. I went with black, orange and green.

 

 

Third. I glued on the spider web to the letters before I Mod Podge the scrapbook paper. Remember when working with spider wed a little goes along way and the more you stretch it out the better it looks. Then I added the paper.

Fourth. Have fun with your embellishments. The glitter skull on the B was from target in a pack of six. The Bats on the middle O are from the $1 section of Target in a pack. The glitter spiders on the last O are from Walmart they were confetti. And of course if you know me you know my obsession with ribbon I need help.

 

 

 

Like I said you can stand them up on a table top. This Year I wanted something new on my door so I hung them up with ribbon on my front door love it. I just duck tapped them to the top of my door. Sorry I didn't take a picture but you didn't see anything from the inside of the door.

 

 

 

 

 

Here is my Easter Version. Maybe this year I'll hang it up on my door.

Halloween Box Craft

 

So I finally went to Tai Pan Trading and it was realllllllly nice, up there with Ikea. They had lots of beautiful Halloween decorations. While there I saw these cute Halloween boxes but when I saw the price they weren't as cute. Well while I was in town I went to Ikea and while I was browsing....

I found these little beauties for $4.99 for the pair and the light bulb came on. I feel a craft coming on...

So I got home and gathered my supplies and got my craft on.

Supplies:

• Boxes
• Scrapbook paper (I got these at Hobby Lobby)
• Paint
• Foam brush
• Wooden knobs (I got these at Hobby Lobby)
• Mod Podge

To make:

First. I cut the scrapbook paper. I just used the boxes as a template.

Second. I painted the edges of the boxes black I didn't wanted baby green showing.

Third. I Mod Podged the scrapbook paper on the boxes.

Fourth. I painted the knobs black and added them to the top to make them look fancier.

Love it for a fraction of the cost I had those same cute boxes. And huge plus for me I got to use my craft muscles. I did by the flying witch and 3 porcelain pumpkins at Tai Pan there were so cute and had a good price I spent well under $10.

Before & After Craigslist Finds

So now that I have more time on my hands and I'm in need of some new decorations for our new home in Utah. I have become a little bit addicted to cragslist and the distribution center don't judge me... I love finding something real cheap that has hidden potential. Then using some elbow grease to create something unique. Here are two of my recent purchases.

So I needed a new vanity and there it was on cragslist for $15 oh yeah that baby was mine.

After some elbow grease and some paint here is what I got.

Next I found this great dresser for $10 when I saw it I fell in love with the vintage look. Not so much the color. Remember you need to look beyond the paint and see the bones of the furniture.

So I used the same painting technique on both pieces to get that old worn vintage look.

With the dresser I did start differently, as you can see someone painted it green and didn't do a good job. First, I tried sanding it but then I went to Home Depot and got some paint stripper. Let me tell you that stuff is amazing. I got the spray, I just sprayed it on and like 3min later the 3 layers of paint just scraped right off. It actually was kinda of fun peeling it off like peeling off a sunburn.  After that this is what I did to get that fabulous paint job...

First. I painted the furniture a base coat that will later show through the top coat, I used Rust-Oleum Satin Espresso. I used spray paint on both pieces of furniture, cause I wanted a clean finish. But you can use any kind of paint.

Second. I took Vaseline and put it on the parts I wanted the brown to show through so it looked old and vintage.

Third. I spray painted on the top coat. I used Rust-Oleum Satin Vintage white.

Fourth. I used my finger nail to scrap off the top coat where I applied Vaseline. Then I used a sanding block to rough up the edges. The more you sand the older and more worn it looks. When sanding think of how the furniture would naturally wear.

Fifth. I did spray a top coat on the top of the dresser and vanity, cause I knew that was going to be wiped down the most.

Sixth. I installed the handles. For the vanity I wanted the pop of color so I got these pretty green porcelain knobs at Hobby Lobby. For the dresser I really wanted to salvage the original handles but those ugly layers of paint did not want to come off. So I got these vintage looking handles from Home Depot.

Fisher Photo Wall

After I got those great Family pictures I couldn't wait to get them on my wall. I had a Perfect spot and I already had frames from the old Arizona house screaming to be hung up on the wall.

 

So like with my other photo wall I started with paper templates. They are easy to move around on the wall to get your placement just how you like it.

 

 

 

Since I'm renting my Home right now I want to be easy on the walls so I used Command strips. I can't tell you how much I love these things and one of the biggest perks when using these is your pictures stay straight.

 

 

I love the big pictures of my family shining bright on my wall. We miss home all the time and it nice to see every ones beautiful smile. Crazy they are already out of date, we have two new additions to the Fisher Family. What can I say we multiply fast.

Photo Wall

So excited my photo wall is done. It came out so cute and the pictures Bedie Price took for us look so great. I have been planning for this and stressing that it wouldn't come out the way I pictured in my head, but it turned out better. yeahhhhhh.

So of course Bedie took the pictures of us before we left Arizona. We took them at the Mesa temple as a way to have great reminder of Arizona. When taking them I had an idea of how I wanted them on my wall. I knew I wanted them to be big, Some up close shots of the kids and some fun poses. I knew I wanted to use this frame that was 20 by 9 which is a bit weired but I thought it would be perfect for an up close shot of our feet. Bedie was great she took some of my suggestions and then worked some of her own magic and when we got them I was soooooo pleased, they all came out A-MA-ZING. I couldn't wait to get them up on my wall. Of course I had to wait till I moved up to Utah.

First. I researched frames and made a rough plan on paper. I went with the Ribba frames from Ikea because they come in a lot of fun sizes and all look uniform and are pretty cheap. Plus if you know me you know how much I love Ikea. So I went to my favorite store and picked them up, I went with  the black finish. I almost went with the new silver finish but it didn't come in all the sizes I was thinking of using in silver.

Second. I came home and made templates of the frames with wrapping paper so I could easily work out the pattern on the wall without putting holes in the wall, I am renting this beautiful home.

Third. Came printing the pictures. Well of course Ikea picture frames are weired sizes those Swedes are silly. I looked at a couple of places comparing price and print sizes. I went with Costco their price was great, they print in an hour and after picking them up I was so happy with them. The quality was so good.

 

I was worried about how a few would come out for example that 20 by 9 frame, I had to print a 20 by 16 photo and cut it down and was worried it would come out OK and it did. Here is the 20 by 20 frame that I had to cut out of a 20 by 30 picture... love it.

 

 

Fourth. Came hanging. Like I said I'm renting, so I used the 3M Command picture frame strips. I can't tell you how much I love these things. So great for not damaging walls and for pictures they are even better cause the picture stays level. But big note I did used nails for the 20 by 20 frame due to it being to front heavy and having a thin frame.

 

 

Also with this move I have been trying to work with things I have from our Arizona house. I have been so please with the challenge and the way everything has been coming together. For this project I re purposed our "Fisher" sign, I made out of an old cabinet door and some vinyl lettering. Our blue "All because two people fell in love" sign also worked so perfect with us all wearing blue in our pictures.

Fun day in the city

So we live in a small town called Tooele and today we drove into the city to run some earns and see a movie. Hey we even went bull ridding. hehehe

I almost pee'd my pants during lunch. We were playing a game in which we would think of a name we would be called on the weekend. We were throwing out names for each other like Samantha, Chester, Spencer and such. Well Adam wanted something manly so I suggested Duke. And he was like yeah that's good until Elizabeth said, " I love you Dooky (Dukey)" Adam quickly looked at me and said nope that won't work as I died laughing.

The day ended well, for when we got home in the mail was the disk Mom Fisher sent of Fisher Family photos we took before we left Arizona. Even Robyn was in town so we got everyone in. They came out soooooooooo good. Bedie Price worked her magic again. I have to show you.

Sad Day

So as most of you know I've move from Arizona to the great state of Utah. So many things are going well here. Weather great, kids have lots of friends, Adam loves his new job and I have more time to craft. But Thursday I got sad, I just miss everyone and there are a lot of people to miss. It hit me when I got a call from my Arizona home teacher, he is so sweet, he just called to see if all was well and then BANG it hit me the sadness. But, all is well cause in my time of sadness, my husband rises to the occasion and reminds me how wonderful he is.

He is working 12 hour overnight shifts and Friday morning he came home with flowers to brighten my day and brighten they did.

Hey they even sparked my craftiness.... First I tried out something I've been dying to try on Pinterest.

Then, I finally finished a project that has been sitting around for what seems like forever. But now I had the time and the reason to finally finish it. As my hubby went off to sleep and my kids off to school I got to work. Here is my end result, this was a Super Saturday sparked by Sister Wilson.

Omg,  I love it. Makes me so happy coming home to fresh flowers. It was soooo easy to make too. Here is what you do...

You need:
- wood heart
- wire hanger
- mason jar
- paint
- ribbon (optional)

note: the wood heart was cut out of wood for this project, but you could maybe buy something similar at a craft store.

I then painted the heart. It came out cute but it was a result of a mistake. I painted the outer edge with brown paint cause I planned on doing the Vaseline trick and then painting it red and having it look aged. but..... when it came time to paint it red I only had one bottle of red craft paint that was pretty much empty, but due to me not wanting to go to the store I squeezed out enough to get one coat on and this is what happened.  I love it.

Then you take the wire hanger and use it to attach the canning jar to the wood. There are 4 holes drilled into the wood to pull the wire through. Then I added the ribbon to cute it up.

Now I have a place to show my husband's pretty flowers.
